From Booklist
The tragedy of the Warsaw Ghetto is well known in Holocaust literature, but despite the publication of numerous personal accounts, studies, and works of fiction dealing with life there, no one has ever written a complete history of the ghetto. Engelking and Leociak, researchers at the Polish Academy of Science, have undertaken this monumental task. Using unpublished archival materials from Poland and Israel as well as published literature, they have painstakingly documented daily life in the ghetto from its creation, in 1941, to its liquidation, in 1943. The authors are, respectively, a psychologist and a scholar in literature, so they examine the material from a multidisciplinary point of view. Following some background material, they proceed chronologically and thematically, beginning with the setting—the topography of the ghetto and the changes to its boundaries over time. They then examine various ghetto offices and institutions: the Judenrat, the Jewish Order Service, the Health Service, etc. They also look at aspects of economic and community life. Final chapters cover the history of the deportation of the Jews in the ghetto to the Treblinka death camp and the events occurring in the ghetto after the deportation as well as the fate of the district after the uprising in 1943. The many maps and illustrations make it possible to see exactly where things were located and where events took place. Various tables compile statistical details. Glossaries of names and terms, an extensive bibliography, and both general and name indexes conclude the book. This excellent work is highly recommended for academic libraries supporting history, Holocaust studies, and Jewish studies programs. --Barbara Bibel

Review
“A pathbreaking, original contribution to the Holocaust literature. These gifted scholars have succeeded in synthesizing complex evidence into a new and comprehensive tapestry of ghetto life.”—Nechama Tec, author of Resilience and Courage: Women, Men, and the Holocaust

(Nechama Tec)

"Engelking and Leociak collect an astonishing amount of unpublished material. They give a full picture of daily life in the ghetto such as has never been attempted before."—Walter Laqueur, editor of The Holocaust Encyclopedia

(Walter Laqueur)

“Presenting an astonishing amount of information, carefully evaluated and usefully organized, The Warsaw Ghetto is not only a lasting guide to a great Jewish city, it is a monument to contemporary Polish scholarship, on which it draws so heavily, and a moving memorial to the nearly half a million Jews who at one time or another suffered in one of the Germans' most grotesque creations during the Second World War.”—Toronto Globe & Mail (Toronto Globe and Mail)

Finalist in the 2010 National Jewish Book Award in the Holocaust Category sponsored by the Jewish Book Council (National Jewish Book Award in the Holocaust Category Finalist Jewish Book Council)

"It is a major achievement that this encyclopedia-like work also has an epic character, traces the fates of individual people, is full of emotions and empathy, and presents the entire diversity of Warsaw Jewry...No historical library, either private or public, can be complete without this volume. No scholar can work on the history of the Warsaw ghetto or the Holocaust in Poland without using this book, which, most certainly, will not be replaced by anything better for many years to come."--Piotr Wróbel, Slavic Review (Piotr Wróbel Slavic Review)
